St. John's Newfoundland's Premiere Event Venue

On November 8, 1822, with a blessing and decree of land from Governor Hamilton, the cornerstone way laid for New Amateur Theatre in downtown St. John’s. In the ensuing years, melodramas, farces and classical fare would entertain patrons until the building burned to the ground in the second of the Great St. John’s Fires in 1845.

In 1883, as the city rebuilt, grew and prospered, the former site of the New Amateur Theatre became home to Callaghan, Glass and Co. Furniture Factory. Yet once again, a spectacular blaze on June 17, 1895 gutted the building. Nearly 100 years after the laying of the cornerstone for the new Amateur Theatre, the demand for moving picture shows brought forth The Majestic. The newspapers of the day reported, “It will be know as ‘The Majestic’ and those who have seen the interior agree that a more appropriate name could not have been chosen.”

In its many incarnations since that opening day, The Majestic has remained at the heart of an ever-changing St. John’s. Today, restored to its original grandeur, The Majestic returns to its position as downtown’s premier location for unforgettable occasions.
